Do not play Alyx without at least playing HL2 and its two episodes. I have no idea why people are recommending otherwise. Sure the gameplay is nice but the game is meaningless without knowing what world you're getting yourself into. A recap would be alright, but it's a lot better just playing the games yourself.
The "water hazard" sequence in Half-Life 2 is bar-none the most extraordinary experience I've ever had playing a single player FPS. It alone makes the game worth the price. Yes, the game is still worth playing. I'd recommend getting the Anthology - with Blue Shift, Opposing Force, and TF Classic - because those games still hold up as well. @Demmetje: I have started half life 1 multiple times but have never finished it. I finally just watched a speed run through of it and called it quits.
It doesn't have a huge amount of plot either so you can quite happily read a summary and skip over it. Half Life 2, on the other hand is still absolutely brilliant even by today's standards. So I'd suggest: Read plot summary of Half Life 1, then play Half Life 2 > Episode 1 > Episode 2.
