As part of our Rafting Safety Series, we review how to use a throw rope or throw bag - an essential part of river safety.

Rope and Rescue Gear. GME Supply stocks a variety of rope and rescue gear to ensure you’ve got the gear you need, when and where you need it, every time. From rescue gear, kernmantle rope, and lifelines to 3-strand rope, rope devices, and rope bags, plus everything in-between GME Supply is your source for all things rope and rescue.

The best way to store roping rope is in rope bags or rope cans, with the honda (eye) straight. Never lay down the rope with the honda twisted because this will ruin the rope. Team roping rope bags are built just for this task and will keep your ropes in tip-top shape. A rope bag keeps your ropes clean and coiled properly, and it helps them last.
The bag also had a rigid ring to hold the mouth open for easy feeding at the belay station. Of course, this required two bags per climbing team as one bag stayed at the belay, and one was carried by the leader up the next pitch. I designed the bag with ripstop nylon, a full length zipper and drawstrings at both ends.

Cut another hole in the bottom of the bottle, just big enough to pass the rope through. A tight fit is good as we will be using the glue gun to seal it after we pass the rope through. Place in the bottom of the bag and measure how much room there is to the top of the bag. From that value, subtract 1.5” for a 1.5L bottle or 2.0” for a 2L bottle.

Hold the Handles: Grab the handles of the jump rope firmly with one hand on each end. Extend the Rope: Extend the rope fully in front of you, ensuring it is straight and free from any twists or kinks. Make a Loop: Create a large loop by bringing the handles together. Hold the loop in your non-dominant hand. SLGa1FA.
